A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
